DOUGLAS FIR
Architects and designers have long appreciated the rich visual quality of Douglas Fir and woodworkers have long appreciated its excellent response to fine craftsmanship and finishing. Douglas Fir is often sawn to expose its vertical grain. This is a technique of positioning the log to a certain degree off perpendicular to the saw. This method produces a cut that reveals a uniform straight grain running the length of the board. The light rosy color of Douglas Fir, which darkens over time when exposed to UV rays, is highlighted when vertical grain cuts are utilized. Premium Exposed® products are graded on an in-house grade rule which exceeds WWPA's standards for pitch, shake and wane. Our material meets or exceeds the rigorous regulations set forth by the Oregon Forest Practices Act. Each piece is end tagged "Premium Exposed"®. Timbers are grade stamped on end to ensure clean face. Anti-stain and anti-mold treated after being debarked and again when cut to size. Ends are clear sealed. Graded well beyond the industry standard, the Rosboro Select Joist delivers a premium quality wood joist with a solid edge. It is kiln dried to a low and consistent 15% moisture content, which virtually eliminates differential shrinking and swelling. Each piece is performance tested for fiber strength and density, and is subjected to stringent grading standards. Only lumber that meets strict MSR 1.8E 1500 fb criteria is considered for Rosboro Select Joist. That means strength, stability, easier installation, less culling, fewer callbacks, and consistent long-term performance which also translates into longer span capabilities than conventional lumber.

The C&Btr grade represents clear and nearly clear Douglas Fir products. Upper grade Douglas Fir may be specified as vertical or flat grain. When unspecified, a combination of vertical and flat grain (mixed grain) is shipped. Upper grade Douglas Fir is often utilized as flooring, paneling, interior trim, and cabinet work where rich, elegant appearances are desired.

Our Billerica yard services all of New England with our very unique and diversified milling operation. Our equipment includes a Woods 4-side planer, a Yates-American Bandsaw and a Yates-American 4-side timber sizer. This machinery enables us to saw and dress any timber to your desired size and specifications. We are also able to run a tongue and groove pattern in 2", 3" and 4" stock. Custom milling of your stock is another option we offer.
Milling Options If rough clean faces are requested we can take a bigger timber and cut a slab off each side to expose clean rough faces to any size required. For a slightly less costly option where rough sawn is required, we can resaw timbers which will produce 1 clean face and 3 natural rough faces which may be darker in color. In an application where size is important, we can just dress rough beams to the standard size 1/2" measurement. When a timber is dressed to the 1/2" it maintains its grade. Anytime a timber is resawn or dressed down below the 1/2" it technically loses its grade. Back to Top |
